The Wages of Improper Waste Disposal (Series II)

"...I tolled all night; these are the few tiny pieces I caught!"

One of the most common realities of the moment is food scarcity. Yes, Inflation, the economists assert. A good analyst would expatiate further that the law of demand and supply is at play! The questions that stare at all are: Who? When? Where, Why? and How? of "demand and supply of commodities vis-a-vis humans and the environment.

A few weeks ago, I participated in an ocean conservation advocacy where we enlightened the lakeside communities of Eleyele on how best to use the water bodies around them so that the needs of the present and future generations wouldn't be compromised. The exercise took us around the lake to examine the state of the lake in a bid to raise preventative, protective, conservative, and management measures. During this exercise, we met with one of the fishermen who doubles as the Chairman of the Fishermen Association on the Lake. He lamented how he tolled all night but to no commercial value. He recounted how his teeming customers were waiting for his return and would be disappointed as usual. He withheld no emotions on how the depreciated lake had crippled their livelihoods and impoverished their families. I leave you to imagine how costly he would charge the few proceeds he caught. You can go further to analyze the stress the buyers and consumers will go through to get proteins in their meals.

Are you one of those who:

👀 throw dirt inside drainages,

👀defecate in canals,

👀throw waste from car windows and on streets,

👀discharge sewages in canals

👀release poison in open spaces?

I'm not sorry to tell you that, you are part of the problems that:

😔depopulate sea resources

😔crippled the businesses of fishermen

😔cause the hike in price of fish and other sea foods in the market.

😔impoverished families and worsening the challenge of malnutrition for women and children.

The good news is, it is never too late to begin to:

🌍 Manage your waste

🌍 Stop open defecation

🌍 Treat your sewage and channel it properly

🌍 Stop throwing dirt on the streets and drainages Remember, whatever you do: good, bad, ugly, or worse has effects on not just your neighbors or fishermen, you stand the risk of the multiplied effects.
