The scourge of climate change on food security globally is immense as environmental degradation worsens. Food waste from the production to consumption chain also deeply heightens food insecurity around the world in an untold proportion. The ongoing hyperinflation is clear evidence.
According to the World Bank, Food Waste accounts for 40% of food produced in Nigeria annually. A Nigerian is said to waste 189kg of food annually making an approximate 389 million tons of food waste annually, the highest in Africa.
How do we checkmate the menace?
The steps begin with ADVOCACY ~ getting people informed of the problem, process, implication, and remedy. This will help to foster a concerted effort towards a tangible solution.
Today, I joined TOYAS ( The Oriented Youth against Hunger and Social Vices) headed by Giwa Abeeblahi Kehinde to raise advocacy on food waste in Bodija Market, Ibadan where we had different units and sections of the market represented and empowered on ways to overcome food waste that endangers human and the environment.
Dear all,
It takes days or weeks without food or water to survive. This makes guiding against food waste very imperative not only for the present but also the future generations. Not even now that climate change and environmental degradation are taking a toll on humanity that we can afford to waste food and other environmental resources on.
I therefore beseech you to play your part in
🌍 Food conservation
🌍 Don't prepare beyond what you can consume
🌍 Share the excess with the needy
🌍 Your remnants are good for animal nutrition, give animals or their owners if you don't domesticate.
🌍 Preserve your food from waste
🌍 Above all, Make resources and environmental conservation your watchword.
Beyond these points, you can adopt stricter resource conservation ideas for the sake of the present and future generations.
