THE WAGES OF IGNORANCE 1 Each day passes with premature deaths of people perhaps with their potentials to make lives and humanity better. Many at times, we spiritualise the tragic events unknowing to us that we kill our body immunity stationed to prevent unwelcoming visitors. Air is an intrinsic part of life without which nothing subsists YET we arrogantly and selfishly abuse it at the expense of lives.😢 According to WHO, 4million people die prematurely in 2018 of illnesses such as stroke, ischemic heart disease, lung cancer etc attributable to household air pollution. Around 7 million people die yearly from exposure to fine particles in polluted air. At the moment, 9 out of 10 persons globally breath in polluted air predominantly in poor nations. I leave you to estimate the impact of this now and in years to come. Even if we cannot completely eradicate air pollution, how about the avoidable ones. Wait a minute, how do you feel when you leave your combustible engine, home and industrial waste to pollute air for commuters and other vulnerables? How about the refuse and bushes you often set ablaze? Now you can imagine the number of lives you ignorantly kill to massage your pride and ignorance! Taking through some major roads lately, I wept for what my country holds for the present and future brethren. The commuters and passengers playing through Iwo Road, Ibadan from Bashorun to Ojoo can testify. I'm aware we are good at blame games particularly on the part of the government, please don't fail to examine your part as a bona fide citizen before you exonerate yourself. I can only appeal to the government of Gov Seyi Makinde to help Oyo State with a sustainable waste management system. Each state of the federation is challenged with urban sprawl and poor municipal waste management in a way. If not for any reason, Nigeria weak health system is enough to prioritise public health through sustainable environmental management.
