Let's Protect our Wetlands

Let's Protect our Wetlands

The trending lyrics in town today is formed around food scarcity that is fast crippling underdeveloped nations of the world. One of the causal factors is the lost in wetlands around the world. Wetlands are integral part of the ecosystem that sustain life and the planet earth.

Wetlands provide a veritable environment for recreation, food production, water conservation, erosion control, water purification, ecosystem services among others. It provided a means of livelihood for farmers and ranchers in small and commercial sizes. On occasions, I visit to behold the magnificence of the Divine in the works of creations.

Interestingly also, I grew up to fetch and sometimes buy fresh vegetables for my parents from these beautiful places around our settlement.

Today, many of these places around the world have gone into extinction. In many places, buildings have replaced these natural habitats or poor maintenance have defaced them.

Among other threats to wetlands are water drainage, pollution, unsustainable use, invasive species, disrupted flows from dams and sediment dumping from deforestation, soil erosion upstream and so on.

According to UNFCCC 2015 report, 35% of the world wetlands were lost between 1970 and 2015 and the damage is on the increase daily.

Can wetlands destruction continue at this pace and yet expect a reverse in food shortage crisis facing the world?

Wetlands holds much more value for the planet earth, YOU and all other inhabitants, hence the need to stand up for its protection in all capacity.

It's World Wetland Day! I challenge you, protect the wetlands around you.
