It was just the usual rain as we often have I thought, until I stepped out to see the catastrophes recorded in the less than 2 hours rain of yesterday.
12 houses, 18shops, 1schools, 1 fueling station and 5 electric poles were adversely affected, leaving about 90 persons homeless and destroyed the livelihoods of about 30 persons. The incidence plunged the already fragile electricity company to rescind, leaving over 5000 population in total blackout. All within a neighborhood of less than 1km round.
The one that broke the camel's back was the community primarily school where pupils are expected to be engrossed in study, but alas, they were busy gathering the remains of their valuables.
Who should be blame? The pupils? Teachers? Parents? Government? windstorm? or God?
Windstorm is a natural phenomenon. It could turn disastrous if the elements to checkmate are lacking!
Coincidentally, climate change isn't helping matters. It invigorates windstorms.
Of those elements are trees which absorb the storms in excess.
The planet is organically nourished with trees and vegetations to cushion the effects of windstorms.
Unfortunately, the vegetation has suffered a great setback in the face of mechanisation and urbanization, hence bringing communities to the fore of windstorms attack with much adverse effects on lives, livelihoods, investments and infrastructures. Sadly, the rural dwellers many of which are poor stand greater loses😰
Can we keep doing same thing and expect a different result?
We can't afford to keep human and material loses so high in the face of global resources scarcity!
Yes, we can't! We need to start taking precautionary measures to checkmate natural hazards from plaguing humanity.
Of the commonest and simplest of the measures is tree planting in our homes, communities and institutions.
We need to grow vegetation to combat climate change and put windstorms to a check. The ugly incidence that leaves Ajobo Community with much socioeconomic, health and environmental impacts would have been halted if at least 15 trees are nurtured before now
Take action today!
Plant a tree!
Promote and ensure green vegetation!
Don't wait till the raining day!
Thank you.
