One major cause of flood in Nigeria is precipitation/rain. Rain is a natural and regular occurrence at stipulated time of the year. One unique thing about rain is that, it brings calmness to physical and biological systems living on it. It's so important to lives that when if fails to precipitate in time, the untold effects on lives and plants could sometimes be massive. How the much benevolence events turned sour with grievous impacts on lives, livelihoods, properties, infrastructures and investment calls for a reflection from thinking beings.
In the year 2020, NEMA recorded 68 deaths with 229,000 people affected by flood events; livelihoods, investments and infrastructures loses in tune of billions of naira in 35 of the 36 states of the federation.
Human activities and lifestyle on the environment is particularly the cause of floodings that wreck havoc on families and communities with irredeemable loses sometimes.
Year 2022 has witness similar grievous event in ondo state where an Eight years old boy was swept away. Several of the 32 states of the federation would have stated having à fair share as Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu earlier stated . We individually know what we loos to flooding in our individual homes and communities. Motorists and pedestrians loses in vehicular properties and other valuables cannot be overemphasized.
For how long can we continue to sustain the recurrent expenses on avoidable hazards?
The devil that plung humanity to this hardship is in human and can only be addressed by human. It begins with our lifestyles of taking responsibility for our environment and maintaining an environmentally sane and sound lifestyle; including:
🌍🤏🏻 Respect for flood plains by avoiding building on it
🌍🤏🏻 Provision of drainages around houses and communities
🌍🤏🏻 Quality delivery of civil engineering projects
🌍🤏🏻 Proper waste disposals to prevent it from blocking drainages.
🌍🤏🏻 Maintenance of public infrastructures like roads, drainages, etc and prevent it from metamorphosing to hazards.
🌍🤏🏻 Restoration of ecosystem particularly forest to enable it to absorb rain water. In other words, tree planting is key to checkmate floodings.
🌍🤏🏻 Complete casting of premises floor results to much runoff. Be environment conscious and sustainable in your architectural designs and civil construction.
🌍🤏🏻 Fill in whatever you can do to mitigate Flood in your area😉
Doing this, we'd save ourselves, communities and nation from self inflicted hardship resulting from precipitation and flood.
Remember, water will always have it's way, don't dare it. More so, we don't have a sustainable substitute to the planet Earth, let's maintain it and make it sustainable.
